Calculating Cost Per Square Foot

When painting a house, installing flooring, or building a home, the square footage of the property is often used to determine the cost or materials to be used.

Painting

Professional painters often base quotes on square footage. Primer covers 200-400 sq ft per gallon.

Flooring

Wood, laminate, and tile flooring costs vary significantly by material and quality.

Building a Home

Construction costs depend on materials, foundation type, roof pitch, and other factors beyond just size.

Common Flooring Costs:

  • Hardwood: $6-12 per sq ft installed
  • Laminate: $3-8 per sq ft installed
  • Tile: $5-15 per sq ft installed
  • Carpet: $3-6 per sq ft installed

Square Footage Calculator: Measure Any Room or Area Instantly

Whether you're buying flooring, painting a room, ordering carpet, or calculating rental rates, knowing the exact square footage of a space is essential. Our Square Footage Calculator handles rectangles, triangles, circles, trapezoids, and L-shaped rooms with precision.

Real estate listings, flooring quotes, and rental prices are based on square footage. Being able to quickly and accurately calculate area can save you money on materials, help you negotiate better rates, and ensure you order the exact amount of flooring, tile, or carpet needed.

This tool supports multiple shapes and allows you to calculate complex room layouts by adding together multiple areas – perfect for L-shaped, T-shaped, or other irregular floor plans.

What is Square Footage?

Square footage refers to the area of a two-dimensional space measured in square feet. One square foot equals a 12" × 12" square. It's the standard unit of measurement for rooms, apartments, and homes in the United States.

In other countries, square meters are used instead. Our calculator supports both measurements and can convert between them instantly (1 sq ft = 0.0929 sq m).

For real estate purposes, square footage typically measures interior livable space, excluding garages, unfinished basements, and sometimes closets. Always clarify what's included when reviewing property listings.

How to Measure and Calculate Square Footage

  1. Step 1: Choose the Shape: Select the room shape – Rectangle, Circle, Triangle, Trapezoid, or L-Shape.
  2. Step 2: Measure the Dimensions: Use a tape measure to measure length and width for rectangular rooms. For irregular rooms, divide them into smaller rectangles.
  3. Step 3: Enter Your Measurements: Input the dimensions in feet, inches, or meters into the calculator.
  4. Step 4: Add Multiple Areas: Use the 'Add Area' feature to measure multiple rooms or sections and get a combined total.
  5. Step 5: Get the Result: Instantly see the area in square feet, square meters, and square yards.

Square Footage Formulas for Different Shapes

Rectangle / Square

Area = Length × Width

The most common calculation. Simply multiply the length by the width in feet to get square feet.

Circle

Area = π × Radius²

For circular rooms or round features. Pi (π) ≈ 3.14159. Radius = Diameter / 2.

Triangle

Area = (Base × Height) / 2

For triangular sections of a room. The height must be perpendicular to the base.

Trapezoid

Area = (Side A + Side B) / 2 × Height

For rooms with one pair of parallel sides of different lengths.

Frequently Asked Questions About Square Footage

How do I measure an irregular room?

Divide the irregular room into two or more rectangles. Calculate the area of each rectangle separately, then add them together for the total.

Does square footage include walls?

No. Standard square footage for rooms and homes measures floor area only, from wall to wall. The thickness of the walls is not included.

How many square feet is a 10x10 room?

A 10-foot by 10-foot room is exactly 100 square feet (9.29 square meters).

How do I convert square feet to square yards?

Divide the square footage by 9. There are 9 square feet in one square yard. For example, 100 sq ft = 11.11 sq yards.
