Mulching is one of the most beneficial things you can do for your garden. It retains moisture, suppresses weeds, regulates soil temperature, and improves the aesthetic appeal of your landscaping. Our Mulch Calculator helps you determine exactly how many bags or cubic yards of mulch you need for any garden bed, tree ring, or landscaping area.
Mulch is sold in bags (typically 2 cubic feet per bag) or in bulk by the cubic yard (delivered by truck). Buying in bags is convenient for small jobs; bulk mulch is significantly cheaper for large areas. Our calculator helps you choose the most economical option.
For best results, apply mulch at a depth of 2 to 4 inches. Too little mulch fails to suppress weeds; too much (over 4 inches) can suffocate plant roots and prevent water from reaching the soil.
Weed Suppression: A 2-4 inch layer of mulch blocks sunlight from reaching weed seeds, dramatically reducing the number of weeds you have to pull throughout the season.
Moisture Retention: Mulch reduces water evaporation from the soil surface by up to 25-50%, meaning you water less frequently and your plants stay healthier during dry periods.
Temperature Regulation: Mulch acts like insulation, keeping soil cooler in summer and warmer in winter, protecting root systems from extreme temperature swings.
Soil Improvement: Organic mulches (wood chips, shredded bark, compost) decompose over time, adding nutrients and improving soil structure.
Volume in Cubic Feet
Volume = Length (ft) × Width (ft) × Depth (ft)Convert depth from inches to feet by dividing by 12. For a 3-inch depth, use 3÷12 = 0.25 feet.
Cubic Yards
Cubic Yards = Cubic Feet ÷ 27There are 27 cubic feet in one cubic yard. Bulk mulch is ordered by cubic yards.
Number of Bags
Bags = Cubic Feet ÷ Bag Size (usually 2 cu ft)Standard mulch bags contain 2 cubic feet. Some premium brands offer 3 cubic foot bags – check the label.
One cubic yard equals 27 cubic feet. Standard 2 cubic foot bags contain 13.5 bags per cubic yard. Always buy a few extra.
For most planting beds, organic mulch is superior because it improves soil health as it decomposes. Rocks don't improve soil and can make beds hotter in summer.
Top up organic mulch every 1-2 years as it decomposes. You can rake and fluff it mid-season to refresh its appearance without adding new material.
Some types of mulch can attract termites. Keep mulch at least 12-18 inches away from your home's foundation and opt for cedar or cypress mulch, which is naturally termite-resistant.
